Broadband internet:-

Communications has evolved from messages sent through birds and animals, postal services, telegrams, inland letters to emails and instant messaging. What makes it so easy today is availability of broadband internet access.

Internet services in India were introduced on August 15, 1995. Within three years, the sector was open to private players to ensure a wider penetration of internet access. However, internet service was slow in the initial stages. To overcome this, broadband internet service was introduced.

The department of telecommunications in India defines broadband as “a data connection that is able to support interactive services including internet access and has the capability of the minimum download speed of 512Kbps (per second) to an individual subscriber from the Point of Presence of the service provider intending to provide the broadband service”. In the regular parlance, it means access to high-speed internet connection. Broadband internet is transmitted to an individual customer with the help of three major technologies. These are:

·        Digital Subscriber Line or DSL
·        FTTH or Fibre to the Home
·        Mobile technologies like 3G and LTE

Digital Subscriber Line uses the traditional telephone lines for faster transmission of data. In most countries, the users of a digital subscriber are divided into two categories. These comprise of the Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) users who are primarily residential customers or internet surfers. The second category is the Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) user which comprises of businesses who use the internet connection for official work including video conferencing. ADSL users receive a lot of data but do not send much as compared to SDSL users who consume a significant amount of bandwidth for both upstreaming and down streaming. In India, major service providers of DSL broadband are BSNL and MTNL.



The Fibre to the Home technology uses optic fibres to convert signals carrying data to light and transmitting it to the user. FTTH transmits data in at a speed of 256 kbps to 100 Mbps which is much faster than the DSL connection.

The third category uses wireless technology to radio link the customer’s location with the service provider. The wireless connection can be transmitted through the mobile or a fixed line.

In India, broadband internet access has issues related to transmission, speed and network. Data transmission depends majorly on the distance of the computer with the service provider’s facility such as the optic fibre. To ensure the rapid proliferation of internet across the country it is necessary to deal with these issues immediately. Building a strong optic fibre network will serve as the backbone of broadband in India. Apart from this, a mix of wireless and wireline technologies is also essential to ensure availability of 512 kbps internet speed to all users.

There is huge potential for penetration of broadband internet in India and overcoming the challenges will lead to its proliferation.
